What is the problem?
On the playing fields of the kindergartens
and schools established downwind of
Schottegat, children are playing. On fist
sight regular, healthy children who are
coughing because of the joy of playing. But
appearance proves to be deceiving.
The Principal of the Preparatory School Cola
Debrot: "More and more children have asthma.
They should go to another school because
they, due to the suffocating air, just can't
hang in there any longer. Pupils regularly
trough-up because of the chemical, toxic
gases they inhale.”

What is the cause of the problem?
Chemical, toxic air pollution penetrates
relatively easy into the human body as it is
being inhaled. The result is a rather direct
relation between the emissions of norm
exceeding concentrations of toxic pollutants
and the subsequent health damage. Especially
children, pregnant women and elderly people
are known to be vulnerable.
The cause of the problem is the old and
obsolete ISLA-refinery in the hart of
Willemstad, the capital city of Curaçao.
This refinery exceeds all international and
local norms regarding chemical, organic and
toxic pollution almost on a daily basis.

Close down the refinery? What are the
alternatives?
The old and obsolete ISLA-refinery currently
provides jobs to only 900 people. This used
to be 12 thousand when Shell operated the
refinery. Meanwhile more then 20 thousand
people are being damaged due to chemical
toxic pollutants.
A frequently asked question therefore is:
“What are the alternatives if the old and
obsolete refinery is t be closed down?
