What do Biologist and Environmental Experts
say?
Local biologists and environmental experts
have repeatedly advised the local government
to intervene. However, increasing the
awareness of local citizens and tourists to
prevent more irreparable damage to the
biodiversity and natural habitats, remains
crucial.

But what if corrupt local government
officials and representatives resort to
“wheeling and dealing” resulting into
agreements granting foreign investors
complete liberty to degrade and damage the
environment
i.e.
with toxic pollutants?

This is the contribution of the ISLA-refinery
to the local community on Curaçao, besides
the public health damage it is
inflicting.
Become aware of toxic pollution on Curaçao
● Did
you know that former sea grass and some
coral reef communities have been almost
totally degraded by industrial contamination
on Curaçao?
●
How many bay areas and coral reef
communities are being degraded by i.e. the
ISLA-refinery?

●
Did you know that waters that flow out of
the Schottegat harbor flow directly into the
Carribean Sea that is being polluted
severely
with chemical, toxic pollutants that flow out into the open sea?

●
Do you want to swim in or nearby polluted
bay areas without being informed about
health effects and dangers relating to toxic
pollution?

Humane Care – Also for the environment of
Curaçao
Humane Care Foundation Curaçao can of course
be easily criticized for informing local
people, foreign guests and tourists in
relation to the severe toxic pollution, the
environmental damage and the health risks
involved.

And we have been criticized, for instance by
the Curaçao Hotel and Tourism Association!
But we firmly believe that protecting the
environment and natural habitat of Curaçao
is worth the criticism. We believe that
saving what is left of the damaged ecosystem
for our future generations, is a worthy
cause.
Fact of the matter is that: We Care!
Humane Care Foundation Curaçao cares for the
environment of Curaçao and the Carribean
Sea. And we care for the health and safety
of local people and foreign guests who
deserve the best of natural beauty!
Why is it important to protect the
environment on Curaçao?
Humane Care Foundation Curaçao takes pride
in its efforts to protect th environment of
Curaçao. We do it, not only for local
people, foreign guests and tourists, but
also for:

Coral Reefs endangered by oil pollution and
by industrial facilities relating to
Aqualectra/-Mirant and Hyatt Hotel.

Seeing is believing!
The following image is of the capital city
Willemstad, the heart of Curaçao. You can
see the Schottegat harbor and its close
distance to the Carribean Sea on the
background.

You might wonder what is within the red
circle, as it certainly does not look like
clean water from the Carribean Sea. It's
not, as it is what is left of what used to
be our Busca Bay. Used to be, as it has been
filled up by Royal Dutch Shell with more
then 800.000 m3 of asphalt and chemical
waste. Note the missing corner on the rights
hand sight of the image.

Here is that missing corner. To give you
some perspective of the scale of this
environmental disaster, note the houses on
the bottom sight. The soil around the
Asphalt Lake and the Chemical Waste Lake are
severely contaminated. These lakes are a
constant source of leakage into the
Schottegat Bay as the dikes have never been
maintained, besides the constant air
pollution due to hydrocarbon vapors.
This all in the direct vicinity of one of
Curaçao's natives: the Mangroves forests.
The relationship between mangroves and their
associated marine life cannot be
overemphasized. Mangroves provide protected
nursery areas for fishes, crustaceans, and
shellfish. They provide food for a multitude
of marine species such as snook, snapper,
tarpon, jack, shellshead, red drum, oyster,
and shrimp.
You can support our legal battle to help
preserving the Mangroves on Curaçao that are
being endangered by chemical, toxic
pollution
